WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Department of State has approved a $3 billion upgrade of 50 Apache Attack Helicopters to the United Kingdom, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a statement on Thursday.
“The Government of the United Kingdom has requested the remanufacture of fifty (50) United Kingdom WAH-64 Mk 1 Attack Helicopters to AH-64E Apache Guardian Helicopters,” DSCA said.
The defense agency said the proposed sale will improve the security of NATO and help counter- terrorism operations.
US defense companies Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and General Electric are the main contractors.
The Apache Attack Helicopter deal comes just months after British Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to increase the United Kingdom’s defense spending.
