WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The suspect in the fatal shooting of a 9-year-old Jamyla Bolden in Ferguson is now in custody and has confessed to authorities about the incident, Ferguson Police Chief Andre Anderson said during a press conference.
"Today, the person responsible for the shooting death of a 9-year-old Jamayla Bolden and the shooting of her mother has been taken into custody and he has confessed to shooting into the home," Anderson said on Thursday.
De’Eris Brown, 21, fired from outside of Bolden’s Ferguson home, fatally hitting the girl while she was doing her homework on August 18, police said.
Feruguson Police Captain Dan DeCarli said Brown’s motive is still unknown and that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
Over the past year, Ferguson has experienced a wave of massive protests and riots after a African-American teen Michael Brown was fatally shot by a white police officer who walked away free from any charges.
The fatal shooting triggered protests around the United States calling for an end to police brutality and racial equality.
