An Arizona man was indicted for providing and conspiring to provide material support to ISIL.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — An Arizona man was indicted for providing and conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State and receiving military type training from the terrorist group, the US Justice Department said in a press release.

On Thursday, Assistant Attorney General John Carlin announced the indictment against 42 year-old Ahmed Mohammed El Gammal of Arizona.

In August 2014, El Gammal used social connections on the Internet to help a New York college student travel to Syria via Istanbul to obtain military training, according to the Justice Department.

Carlin noted that El Gammal's case is “another example of how social media is utilized for nefarious and criminal purposes around the world."

El Gammal was arrested on August 24 in Avondale, Arizona and could face between 10 and 35 years in prison.

According to US intelligence, up to 30,000 foreign fighters have joined the Islamic State extremists in their fight against the government forces in Syria and Iraq.
