SOCHI (Sputnik) – The festival will take place in the city of Kamyshin, according to organizers. Visitors will have the opportunity to attend an agricultural fair, a watermelon parade, a "Watermelon Kids" competition and a scarecrow contest, as well as a parade of sailing ships.
A youth culture festival will also take place on Saturday in Kamyshin.
The Volgograd Region watermelon festival has been singled out as one of the best tourist events in Russia’s Southern Federal District.
The watermelon is thought to have originated in southern Africa. It was cultivated in India in the 7th century and reached China by the 10th century.
The watermelon was brought to Russia by the tatars around the 13th-14th century.
Japan has been growing watermelons in special containers or molds, resulting in unusual shapes. The square-shaped and heart-shaped watermelons are some of the examples.
