MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An Egyptian court passed a sentence on three Al-Jazeera journalists on Saturday, handing them three years in jail for alleged links to an Islamist organization, the Arabic news network said.

Egyptian Baher Mohamed, Canadian Mohamed Fahmy and Australian Peter Greste were convicted last year of purportedly helping the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that was outlawed in Egypt after a 2013 military takeover.

The Canadian and Australian journalists were initially given seven years behind bars, while the Egyptian national received 10 years. But an appeals court ordered their retrial in January of this year, saying the verdict lacked evidence, according to Al-Jazeera.

Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate Mohamed Morsi was elected president in 2012. He was deposed by a military coup following days of massive demonstrations against his party in 2013. Former army chief and current President Abdul Fattah Sisi has since banned the Brotherhood and arrested scores of Morsi supporters.
