MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The death toll from a Friday car crash in the southern African country of Swaziland has climbed to 65, Swaziland Solidarity Network said in a statement.
"We can now confirm that 65 young girls have perished on that accident even those that we admitted which earlier on were reported critically injured. We want to extend our deepest [condolences] to their families," the statement published Saturday read.
According to previous media reports, the car crash claimed the lives of 38 people and left 20 more critically injured.
Umhlanga, or the Reed Dance, is Swaziland’s best known cultural event which lasts for eight days and attracts annually up to 40,000 girls and young women.
