WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The US nuclear aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan left San Diego to join the Seventh Fleet based in Yokohama, Japan, the US Navy said in a statement.

“Ronald Reagan provides a combat-ready force that works with the navies of other nation partners to protect the collective maritime interests of the US and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia Pacific region,” the Navy said on Monday.

The Ronald Reagan will replace the older USS George Washington, which after departing Japan in May will undergo refurbishing in the United States.

The Ronald Reagon is scheduled to arrive in Japan in the fall of 2015.

“USS Ronald Reagan is 11 years newer than USS George Washington, which means the carrier has benefited from 11 years of evolving technology,” said Captain Christopher Bolt, the nuclear carrier’s commanding officer.

The Ronald Reagan is 1,092 feet long and has a displacement of 113,600 short tons. With a crew of about 3,200 sailors, the aircraft carrier can go more than 30 knots and carries 90 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters.
