MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The money will be used for infrastructure projects expected to be launched in 2017 and completed over the next decade, securing the jobs of the base's 6,700 military and civilian staff, as well as creating many more, Osborne said, according to the BBC.
"Today's announcement of more than £500m demonstrates the UK government's commitment to investing in the infrastructure and capability to ensure that Faslane remains the centre of UK submarine operations for the next generation…. Across Scotland, around 12,600 people work in defence and my defence spending commitments will secure these jobs," Osborne was quoted as saying.
The announcement follows Osborne's July 8 budget announcement, in which he pledged to meet the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) defense spending requirement of at least 2 percent of annual GDP.
The upgrading of the aging Trident system was a hotly-discussed topic in the run-up to the May 7 UK general elections, in which the Conservative Party, who pledged to renew the program, swept to victory.
