MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — The new shelter in Calais will house 1,500 migrants, while there are over 3,500 migrants currently living in tents in Calais, which means some 2,000 still remain without accommodation.
“That is a question that we have as well. We don’t know what the French government intends to do with the 2,000 that will stay on top of the 1,500. Of course, something has to be done. We have to do something for this humanitarian problem,” Philippe Mignonet said.
On Monday, the European Commission allocated 5.2 million euro ($5.8 million) to provide undocumented migrants in Calais with necessary humanitarian assistance. The funds will be used to set up a tent site offering humanitarian assistance to around 1,500 migrants.
“We have asked the government yesterday at a private meeting, we have not had any answer yet,” Mignonet said.
He also called for the creation and implementation of a common European migration policy, worked out by the entire Europe Union, including those countries that would prefer not to be involved.
“We must decide who is entitled to come, why and for those who are not allowed to come to Europe, what do we do about them?” Mignonet said.
On August 17, France requested additional funding from the European Commission under an accelerated procedure to resolve the refugee crisis in Calais where an estimated 3,500 to 5,000 migrants, whose ultimate destination is Britain, are currently camped.
