WASHINGTON, (Sputnik) – The Los Angeles Times reported the city council voted 15-0 to give Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti the authority to pursue the Olympic bid.
Several city council members had previously expressed fears over the city’s promise to subsidize possible Olympic budget overruns, something the International Olympic Committee usually demands of host cities.
The United States has not hosted the Summer Olympics since the 1996 games in Atlanta.
In July, Boston withdrew its bid to host the games citing financial issues.
The decision over which city will host the 2024 Summer Olympics will be made on September 15, 2017 in Lima, Peru.
