ANKARA, (Sputnik) — Initially, the two soldiers were wounded and then sent to the Kilis State Hospital, where one of the soldiers died later, the official confirmed.
"Today…. our troops who patrol the border area were attacked from the Syrian territory…. One soldier was unfortunately killed, a loss for our military. The investigation into the case is underway," Kilis' Governor Suleyman Tapsız was quoted by the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet as saying.
Turkey, which borders war-Torn Syria, is conducting airstrikes on ISIL positions in the country. The move was triggered by a July 20 suicide bombing in the Turkish city of Suruc. The attack, reportedly carried out by ISIL, killed at least 32 people.
Turkey has also been supporting the efforts of the US-led anti-IS coalition. On August 12, the United States launched the first manned aircraft from Turkey’s Incirlik airbase to strike ISIL targets under the deal reached by US President Barack Obama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July.
