MOSCOW, (Sputnik) — The 96-year-old veteran politician, who led West Germany from 1974 to 1982, was taken to St. George Clinic in Hamburg on early Tuesday, the Bild tabloid said.
"His condition is very serious," Schmidt’s doctor Heiner Greten told the popular German outlet. He compared the blood vessel blockage in Schmidt’s leg to what usually happens during a stroke.
Doctors will decide on Wednesday whether surgery is needed to restore blood flow.
In early August, the former German leader was admitted to hospital with an initial suspicion of stroke, but was diagnosed with dehydration.
