MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Hundreds of undocumented migrants have been protesting outside Budapest Keleti railway station, for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, demanding that the Hungarian authorities allow them to travel to Germany, media reported.
On Tuesday, Hungarian authorities closed Budapest’s main train terminal to migrants in an attempt to prevent them from traveling to neighboring European countries. The decision came after some 2,500 refugees arrived by train in southern Germany from Hungary and Austria on Monday night.
The number of those gathered at Budapest's main international train station is estimated by the ITV channel to be at over 2,000.
However, Budapest police, quoted by local media, stressed that they would maintain a continuous and permanent presence at the train station, implementing the Schengen Borders Code, that does not allow undocumented migrants to cross EU borders.
Hungary is being used as a gateway to wealthier EU countries by thousands of migrants. As a result, the country is experiencing an unprecedented influx of undocumented immigrants entering the country. Budapest estimates that over 156,000 migrants have illegally entered the country since the beginning of 2015.
