Hungarian authorities denied migrants access to board trains en route to Germany in Keleti on Tuesday, to which an estimated crowd of 2,500 people stranded there responded Wednesday by staging protests.
Budapest argues that the travel restrictions follow EU regulations keeping undocumented migrants from crossing borders within the Schengen Area and preventing asylum applications in multiple EU member states.
"[Minister of the Prime Minister's Office Janos Lazar] requests that the Embassy help in unambiguously clarifying which European legislation the German government regards as applicable in this situation," the announcement read.
Hungary also requested Germany's help in describing the legal procedures migrants could face in Germany, as well as expectations facing them after clearing these procedures.
"The Government of Hungary…requests that the Budapest Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany urgently assists in providing information on site to illegal migrants currently occupying public areas at Budapest’s Keleti Railway Station," the announcement stressed.
The request coincides with Budapest's launch of a targeted public awareness campaign aimed at discouraging migrants from crossing into Hungary.
