The “US occupying forces” will probably stay in Germany for a longer period of time. Although the US troops have been reduced from 300,000 to 30,000 soldiers, Americans still conduct their activities on German soil and practically “do what they want,” Contra Magazin wrote.
The base should have been returned to Germany in February 2015, but the Ukraine crisis delayed the process. Now it is clear that the US Army will use the base until further notice, the magazine reported.
Coleman Barracks was also reported to have a special section, where the only military prison of the American forces in Europe is located. According to various reports, people suspected of conducting terrorist activities were tortured in the detention facility in 2003 and 2006.
At the same time, US Army Lieutenant General Ben Hodges stressed that US troops will remain in Germany on a temporary basis. He said the US considers storing military equipment in the Baltic states, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, but requires certain period of time to find suitable sites.
