MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The historic decision to hold the Games in an African city for the first time ever was made at the annual CGF General Assembly in Auckland, New Zealand, by representatives of 71 Commonwealth nations and territories.
Durban was the only contender to host the event after in February Canada’s Edmonton withdrew from the race for financial reasons.
The Commonwealth Games are held every four years and were established as the British Empire Games in 1930. In 2018 the games will be held in Australia's Gold Coast.
