Thousands of Guatemalans Call for Nationwide Strike to Oust President
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The motion was adopted by 132 out of 158 lawmakers, clearing the two-third majority requirement that was needed to put the resolution through the Congress.

Crowds outside the parliament cheered the announcement. Thousands of protesters took to the streets last week, calling for a nationwide strike against Perez’s corrupt government.

Perez has repeatedly refused to step down from office despite the newly found evidence of alleged corruption. His officials are accused of receiving bribes from companies in exchange for relief from import duties.

Guatemalan ministers of finance, economy, infrastructure, education and health have all resigned amid the scandal as the country prepares to vote in a general election this Sunday. They are to elect president, vice president, all parliamentarians, as well as local authorities.
