On Wednesday, German interior minister Thomas de Maiziere said in an interview with Die Zeit newspaper that the country should make a number of changes, including in the constitution, to overcome the migration crisis.
"I do not understand his logic. Refugees are not coming because we have the wrong constitution. The refugees are coming because they are fleeing from wars and desperate reality, they are being prosecuted. I think he is trying to organize a battle on the wrong front," Reinhard Buetikofer said.
Germany is one of several EU countries facing a major migrant crisis, as hundreds of thousands of people flee the crisis-torn regions in the Middle East and North and Sub-Saharan Africa hoping to find refuge in the European Union.
According to the European Union's external border protection agency Frontex, over 340,000 migrants and refugees were detected at the bloc's external borders between January and July 2015, which is three times higher than during the same period in the previous year.
