WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump turned generous on the issue of legal immigration on Thursday, saying the United States should continue to welcome in the most talented people from around the world.
“When people come in legally, we can allow that,” Trump told a news conference in the lobby of Trump Towers in New York City. “I want to have a great, fat open door. I want people with great talent to come into the United States.”
Trump soared to the head of the Republican Party presidential field on the basis of his pledge to stem the tidal wave of illegal immigrants pouring into the United States across its land border with Mexico.
However, also on Thursday, Trump publicly signed a pledge that he would not leave the Republican Party to mount an independent challenge.
Trump’s remarks on immigration indicated he now wanted to emphasize the positive aspects of his message.
“I believe so strongly in immigration,” the billionaire businessman insisted. “[But] we have to have immigration done in a legal manner.
An ABC News/Washington Post opinion poll published on Wednesday reported that 48 percent of all White Americans had a favorable view of Trump, but 82 percent of Hispanic Americans had an unfavorable view of him.
