Accused of taking bribes from companies in exchange for government favors, Pérez Molina faced widespread calls from protesters for his resignation. Thousands have gathered outside of the parliament building since the scandal emerged in April.
New elections will be held on Sunday to determine Pérez Molina’s replacement.
The scandal also led to a number of other government officials stepping down. Ministers of finance, education, health, infrastructure, and economy all resigned after becoming embroiled in the corruption scheme.
