“We will increase the budget of the EU external border protection agency Frontex three times, in order to better protect our borders. We are struggling with the people smugglers. A very well-organized criminal network for the transportation of illegal migrants into Europe is operating in the region,” Avramopoulos said.
According to the commissioner, a dactyloscopy (fingerprinting) method will be introduced to help track migrants.
The commissioner also called for a systematic approach to the problem of migration.
According to Avramopoulos, the migration crisis is neither local, nor regional, but is a global issue. Avramopoulos said that the crisis is directly related to geopolitical instability, and problems of neighboring countries.
Frontex estimates that over 340,000 migrants have arrived in Europe since the beginning of 2015.
