MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the situation in Syria and fight against the Islamic State (ISIL) militant group in a phone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday.
The conversation was initiated by the US side.
"During the talk various aspects of the Syrian situation, challenges related to the fight against ISIS [Islamic State] and other terrorist groups, as well as cooperation to support the United Nations efforts aimed at establishing political process in Syria in accordance with the Geneva communique dated June 30, 2012, were discussed," the statement said.
It added that Lavrov and Kerry agreed to continue close contacts in relation to the Syrian crisis settlement.
