The spectacle of US presidential hopeful Donald Trump's campaign has been a veritable boon for the American media; the real estate mogul's appearances on television are so wildly popular among viewers that advertisers are being charged rates usually reserved for major sporting events.

The Republican Party's first primary debate on Fox News attracted an unprecedented 25 million viewers, while the second debate in California will bring the CNN $200,000 for each half-minute-long spot, 40 times its normal rate, the Guardian reports.

“CNN have put a huge price tag on the upcoming debate and they’re selling it like a major sporting event,” David Campanelli of Horizon Media, a New York based TV sales and research firm was quoted as saying by the Guardian. “This early on in the political process we can be 100% certain it’s related to Donald Trump.”

NBC, which ended its relationship with Trump in June due to his derogatory speech about immigrants, wishes to restore their relationship by inviting the Republican presidential candidate to guest star on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this upcoming Friday.

Due to his celebrity status, Trump attracts the attention of broad audiences, which brings commercial value to any broadcasted event featuring the billionaire.

“There’s a reason Arnold Schwarzenegger became governor of California,” Billie Gold at the TV sales and research firm Carat told the Guardian. “Once you have a known figure, they take on a character. Trump is saying things you don’t normally hear in politics and people are curious to know what his plans are.”

TV producers now love Trump and call him an “exceptionally desirable” guest, according to the Guardian. However, if his ratings fall, his attractiveness for television producers will drop and maybe even die off.
