MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Two Turkish police officers were killed and three were wounded early Sunday in a grenade attack by gunmen from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Turkey’s southeastern Diyarbakir province, local media reported.
Government forces came under fire from grenade launchers when they arrived to refill the tranches dug out to plant explosives by PKK separatists, who are fighting to establish a Kurdish autonomy, according to the Daily Sabah newspaper.
The security situation in Turkey deteriorated following a suicide bombing in the Turkish border city of Suruc on July 20 and a spate of police killings in southeastern Turkey, for which the PKK claimed responsibility.
The PKK was founded in the late 1970s. The group is considered to be a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and NATO.
