BERLIN (Sputnik) — According to Schindler, the main terrorist threat to Germany, however, comes from German citizens returning to the country after fighting alongside ISIL abroad.
“There are no concrete evidences that there are terrorists among the refugees from the Middle East and Africa. However, one cannot completely exclude that terrorists do not use existing smuggling organizations [for such purposes],” Schindler said in an interview with the German tabloid BILD.
Europe is currently in the midst of a major migrant crisis, as thousands of migrants flee conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
Last month, the German Interior Ministry said it expected 800,000 asylum seekers and refugees to come to the country by the end of the year, almost four times as many as in 2014.
