Distorted coverage of the situation in Afghanistan by sections of the Western media is an “unfortunate” reflection of government policy, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai told Sputnik Arabic on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The former Afghan leader, who led the Central Asian nation from 2004 to 2014, said that such distortions are “mostly done by Western media as I’ve seen for the last 13 years.”

“If [the Western media disinformation campaign] is out of an intention, then it would indicate a policy, that would also be unfortunate for all of us,” Karzai stressed.

Afghanistan is in a state of political and social turmoil with the Taliban increasing its insurgency across the country and Islamic State taking advantage of the instability to gain a foothold in the country.

In a recent interview with Sputnik, the secretary general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Dmitry Mezentsev, said he welcomed dialogue with Western media outlets to promote objectivity in coverage.

Afghanistan is an observer of the SCO, whose members include Russia, China, and four post-Soviet Central Asian nations.
