MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Serbia cannot solve the problem of mass migration to Europe on its own but will do its best to guarantee humane conditions for refugees fleeing up the Western Balkan route from war-torn Africa and the Middle East, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic told Sputnik Serbia on Tuesday.
"Why do we have to bear the brunt of this [refugee crisis] if 90 percent of migrants wish to be in just four European countries?" Nikolic asked.
He said Europe should not leave Serbia, Macedonia and other Balkan nations alone with the surging flow of war refugees. "We cannot solve this problem, but we will make every effort to make sure that refugees do not suffer from inhumane conditions."
Since the start of 2015, tens of thousands of migrants and refugees have opted for what is considered a safer Balkan land route through the former Yugoslavia, Macedonia and Serbia into the European Union through Hungary. Their key destination countries are thought to be Germany and Sweden.
