MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Champions League and Europa League football clubs will donate one euro ($1.1) per every ticket to their first home games sold to help refugees amid a global migrant crisis, European Club Association Chairman said.
"We did agree that all Champions League participants and all Europa League participants, that means a total of 80 clubs, will donate one euro for each sold ticket for the first European home match," Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told a press conference on Tuesday.
Last week, Portuguese football club Porto sent a letter to UEFA proposing the donation.
The European Union is grappling an unprecedented migrant crisis, with thousands of undocumented migrants, mainly from the Middle East and North Africa, arriving in the EU member states, fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries.
According to the EU border agency Frontex, a record number of over 340,000 refugees and migrants arrived at the EU borders between January and July 2015.
