Valery Spiridonov, a 31-year old computer programmer from Russia who may become the first man in the world to undergo a full head transplant, spoke with Sputnik Italia and said the much-anticipated surgery will take place in 2017.

Spiridonov said he decided to volunteer for Italian doctor Sergio Canavero, who claims he can complete the head transplant, to do something important for the progress of science.

"I'm very passionate about science and technology, and convinced that with their help humanity should be able to solve problems with which we previously couldn't cope… When I realized that I can take part in something really big and important, I had no more doubts and started working towards this direction," Spiridonov told Sputnik Italia.

The young man also said he trusts Dr. Canavero and is convinced that the doctor knows exactly what he's doing.

"The rest of us should help him to achieve his goal, because it will be a real breakthrough in science," Spiridonov said.

Spiridonov is optimistic and said the full body replacement will allow him to get rid of the physical limits and be more independent.

"When I become independent, I will learn to experience the beauty of living in a healthy body," the Russian said, adding that he'd love to visit Italy after his body recovers and he'll be able to walk on his own.

Regardless of how the operation ends up, never give up and keep your chin up, Spiridonov said:

"Look at me and other people with disabilities, with enough diligence, hard work and hunger for knowledge life will always be bright, interesting, full of friends and memorable moments!"

Spiridonov suffers from Werdnig Hoffman disease that causes a muscle wasting condition seriously diminishing his physical capabilities and limiting him to a wheelchair.
