NIZHNY TAGIL (Sputnik) – Russia needs to maintain its second position in arms sales on the world market regardless of the current unfriendly battle against Russia’s defense industry, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Thursday.

“There is literally a real battle in regard to arms [sales] against our positions,” Rogozin said.

He emphasized that it was necessary to maintain the second place in arms sales on the world market.

Russia accounted for some 27 percent of the world's exports of arms between 2010 and 2014, preceded only by the United States with 31 percent, according to a study conducted by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

In the same time period, 56 countries signed contracts with Russia for the delivery of major weapons, including India, China and Algeria, which make up the majority of the country's total exports, the study said.
