Hungary has erected a 13-foot fence along its 110-mile southern border with Serbia, to be followed soon by a wall, and earlier in the day, Macedonia announced that it was considering constructing a wall on its border with Greece.
“Those who build fences or otherwise block the passage of asylum seekers are driving them into the arms of unscrupulous smugglers — the tragic evidence for this is to be found in the media every day…” Leonard Doyle said.
An estimated 850,000 migrants from the Middle East are expected to come to Europe in next two years, according to the United Nations.
On Wednesday, European Commission (EC) President Jean-Claude Juncker said EU member-states should agree on a "compulsory basis" to resettle 160,000 refugees amid the ongoing migrant crisis. Denmark and Slovakia have expressed opposition to the proposal.
