"The Middle East is disintegrating under the twin forces of militant Islam — militant Sunnis led by Islamic State (ISIL) and militant Shiites led by Iran. I believe that we can cooperate in practical ways to roll back the tide of militant Islam both in the Middle East and in Africa," Netanyahu said at the meeting with his UK counterpart David Cameron in London.
On Wednesday, when the Israeli leader arrived in the United Kingdom, hundreds of protesters gathered outside Downing Street to voice their opposition to Netanyahu's visit and to call on Cameron to impose sanctions on Israel in order to help stop what protesters termed "Israeli war crimes" against Palestinians.
In 2014, Israel launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip, an area currently controlled by Palestine's Hamas. According to UN estimates, some 2,200 Palestinians were killed during the offensive.
