MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia has not been carrying out any transit flights through Ukraine since 2014, a source in the Russian air transport agency Rosaviation told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

Plan B: Russia May Use New Aid Flight Routes to Syria Bypassing Greece
Earlier in the day, Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk instructed his country's national air traffic services to heighten their monitoring of Russian planes flying to Syria, including those using Ukrainian airspace.

"[Russian] civilian aircraft do not perform flights to Syria," the source said.

Ukraine's southeast has been engulfed in a conflict since April, 2014, when Kiev launched a military operation to suppress local militia in the Donbass region.

Since the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash in the Donbass on July 17, 2014, Ukraine State Aviation Service has completely closed the airspace over eastern Ukraine.

Shortly after the catastrophe, Russia banned its airliners from making transit flights through Ukrainian airspace until the conflict in the region ended. Since then, Russian flights have been routed through neighbouring states.
