BEIJING (Sputnik) — China and the United States may cooperate on cybersecurity and, together with other countries, elaborate binding international cybersecurity rules in a spirit of respect, Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi said Friday.

The proposal comes as Chinese hackers have recently been accused of stealing US government data.

"We hope China, the United States and other countries could work together to work out the rules for cybersecurity in the international arena in the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit," Yang told China Daily in an interview ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's official visit to the United States.

In July, the US Office of Personnel Management announced that Chinese hackers were involved in the large cybersecurity breach at the federal agency that compromised over 21 million personal, financial and health files of nearly every current and many former US federal employees.

In August, a senior US intelligence officer revealed that Chinese hackers allegedly had access to US President Barack Obama’s top national security and trade officials' emails for over five years.

Washington is considering a broad range of retaliatory measures against Beijing for the massive government data breaches linked to the country’s hackers.
