Nearly 90,000 people have signed up for a march in the UK capital of London to be held on Saturday to show solidarity with the nearly half a million refugees arriving in Europe in 2015.

LONDON (Sputnik) – The Solidarity with Refugees group registered almost 89,500 people confirming to attend the demonstration, scheduled at noon local time (11:00 GMT.) Demonstrators are scheduled to convene near Hyde Park and embark on a 2-mile march toward Westminster.

Organizers timed their action to an EU interior ministerial-level session on the European response to the refugee crisis scheduled for Monday, September 14, which UK Home Secretary Theresa May is expected to attend.

“It is vital that she takes with her the conviction that the British people that she represents are open to helping refugees,” Solidarity with Refugees wrote on its social media.

The group said it was imperative to urge May that Europe “can’t continue to allow thousands to die trying to reach the EU and their legal right to claim asylum.”

Spanish Trade Unions to Hold Weekend Rallies in Solidarity With Refugees
In a commentary piece published last week, the event’s organizer cited her personal distress with the lack of help offered to refugees on the part the United Kingdom and Europe behind her drive to organize.

Ros Ereira said it was her first time organizing a rally of any kind, let alone on such a large scale.

The Solidarity with Refugees march aims to persuade UK Prime Minister David Cameron to accept more refugees into the country than the 20,000 he pledged this week.

The demonstration, scheduled to wrap up at 15:00 GMT in Parliament Square is supported by 20 activist groups and solidarity organizations, including Amnesty International and Stop the War Coalition.
