WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Syrian American humanitarian groups will rally in Washington, DC over the weekend to call on the Obama administration and other foreign governments to allow more refugees from Syria into the United States.

"The Syrian American humanitarian organizations have coordinated this rally to urge the US and international governments to help alleviate the Syrian refugees crisis by accepting more refugees and protecting civilians in Syria," the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced via Facebook on Friday.

Public Health Considerations Also Factor in Letting Syrian Refugees in US
Hundreds are expected to gather in front of the White House on Saturday afternoon to take part in the "Let Them In" rally to call on the White House to allow at least 65,000 more Syrian refuges into the United States, and on the European Union to allow more refugees into the bloc.

The rally comes just days after the Obama administration announced its plans to take up to 10,000 Syrian refugees into the United States as the migrant crisis in Europe continues to worsen.

Earlier in the week, the European Parliament backed the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s proposal to relocate some 160,000 refugees throughout EU member states over the next two years. However, some EU states including Denmark and Romania, have expressed unwillingness to accept the refugee quota.

Meanwhile, the Washington rally will take place ahead of the Monday meeting scheduled for EU countries’ internal affairs ministers who plan to discuss the European Commission’s proposal for permanent and biding scheme of distribution of refugees.
