Kim Ki-Jong, a Korean nationalist and supporter of unification between North and South Koreas, slashed US ambassador Mark Lippert with a short knife at a restaurant in Seoul, before Lippert, who suffered a deep gash to his face, was scheduled to give a speech. Kim has been found guilty not only of attempted murder and assault of a foreign envoy, but also of violating of the National Security Act.

Kim attacked the Japanese ambassador to Korea in 2010 by throwing pieces of concrete and was given a suspended jail term, Reuters reports.
Before attacking Lippert, Kim reportedly shouted “No drills for war,” expressing his discontent with annual joint US-South Korean military maneuvers.
