NKARA (Sputnik) — Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was re-elected as the chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Saturday.
Earlier, Davutoglu has been nominated as the single candidate for the party leadership.
The results were announced during the AKP’s fifth ordinary congress, a high level party summit held once in three years.
Davutoglu’s candidacy was backed by 1,353 valid votes out of a total of 1,380 party delegates.
He will now lead the AKP list in the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for November 1.
The early elections in Turkey were announced after the party failed to gain a majority vote in the June 7 elections for the first time since 2002 and did not manage to reach consensus with other parliamentary parties to form a coalition government within the time stipulated by the country's constitution.
In late August, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan approved a new caretaker cabinet, which will hold office until November elections.
