MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East cannot be resolved in the long term by bombing ISIL militant group's positions in Syria, a spokeswoman on foreign affairs of Australia's Labor Party said.

Tanya Plibersek has also called for more humanitarian help to Syria and a political solution to the four-year-long conflict in the country with the assistance of Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States, Sky News Australia reported Saturday.

Islamic State Winning in Eyes of Recruits After Year of Airstrikes
On Saturday night, Australian jets completed their first mission in Syria following Prime Minister Tony Abbott's announcement on Wednesday that Australia had decided to expand its airstrikes against ISIL to Syria within the framework of the US-led international coalition.

According to the Australian Air Task Group's statement, the operational mission was completed without incident.

Australia's involvement in the US-led coalition against ISIL in Syria has been so far limited to refuelling and intelligence gathering.

Syrian government forces are fighting against the so-called moderate opposition and militants from extremist groups including ISIL, which has taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq, and the Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate in the country.

Since the start of the conflict, the United States and some of its allies have supported the moderate Syrian rebels while calling for current president Bashar Assad's resignation.
