"Why don't they want to convene an EU summit [on refugees]? Because they are afraid of the truth. They do not want to talk about the fact that there are EU countries that support the civil war in Syria, from where a huge number of refugees comes to Europe. They do not want to convene a summit because they would hear the truth that the Italian, French and Spanish fighter jets bombed Libya," Robert Fico stated.
According to him, another reason for the refusal to convene the extraordinary meeting is the complexity of finding a joint solution to the problem.
"When it was necessary to fight for the banks, money for Greece, the summits were organized in a couple of days, and when there is such a major humanitarian crisis, which touches the very basis of Europe, we are unable to convene an EU summit," Fico stressed.
Europe is struggling with a large-scale refugee crisis, as hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers from crisis-torn countries in Africa and the Middle East seek safe haven in EU member states.
On Wednesday, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that about 500,000 people are estimated to have arrived in Europe since the beginning of 2015.
