MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The Egyptian Interior Ministry said earlier that 12 people, including Mexican tourists and their accompanying Egyptian tour guides, had been accidentally shot dead by security forces during an anti-terror raid in the Wahat area of the Western Desert.
"It is necessary to respect and follow the instructions of local [Egyptian] authorities, not to participate in political protests, avoid crowds, especially for political reasons, and unnecessary journeys by car and public transport, particularly at night," the embassy said in a statement.
The Mexican Embassy added that Egypt was going through a difficult process of political and social changes and facing a serious challenge in achieving complete internal and regional stability.
The Western Desert is a popular tourist attraction in Egypt, but is also known as a hideout for militant groups.
