WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the expansion of the agency’s program to detect nuclear and radiological threats in major US cities in a press release on Monday.
"The Securing the Cities program is a key part of the Department’s effort to protect the nation against the malicious use of nuclear and other radioactive materials," DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said commenting the expanded nuclear detection program.
In the coming two years, the metropolitan areas around Texas and Illinois will receive millions of dollars in new funding to build a "robust, regional nuclear detection capability," the DHS said.
The Department of Homeland Security has described nuclear terrorism as "the most immediate and extreme threat to global security."
The nuclear detection program at DHS is part of the US government’s approach to preventing a nuclear or radiological attack against the United States.
