France would support the efforts of a coalition of the Middle East countries to rid Syria of the presence of the Islamic State militant group, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The ISIL is a militant extremist group occupying vast territories both in Syria and Iraq with the aim of establishing an Islamic caliphate in the region.

"If a coalition of countries in the region were formed to liberate [Syria] from the tyranny of Daesh [Arabic acronym of IS], they would have the support of France," Valls said on his Twitter page.

He added that the solution to the Syrian conflict would contribute to the alleviation of the European migrant crisis.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since the 2011 political collapse. In addition to countering opposition forces, Damascus is battling various Islamist groups, including the ISIL.

The US-led international coalition has been launching airstrikes against ISIL positions.

Thousands of people flee Syria amid violence and travel to Europe that has been beset by a refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants arriving in EU member states in search of safety.
