European lawmakers have agreed on the resettlement of 40,000 refugees throughout the bloc from Greece and Italy. A decision on an additional 120,000, proposed by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, is scheduled for October 8.
"Let us help inspire the political will needed to respond to this situation," Kanerva stressed. "Countries like Italy, Greece, Turkey, Malta and Hungary cannot handle the influx on their own. The countries of the Balkans also need support."
The European Union external border protection agency Frontex said this week over half a million migrants have entered EU territory in January-August this year.
