MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Romanian Revista 22 weekly magazine, the Romanian side expressed to the envoy its view that the proposed construction of the fence "contradicted the European spirit" and was politically wrong.
In addition, Romania called for an end to the recent tit-for-tat between the countries' foreign ministers that had started after Hungary announced its new fence plans.
Earlier in the day, local media reported that Hungary had started preparatory work to extend its anti-migrant fence eastward toward Romania to prevent migrants from crossing into the country through this route after the Hungarian government managed to drastically reduce the influx of migrants through its border with Serbia.
On Tuesday, new legislation came into enforce in Hungary that imposes prison sentences for crossing the border illegally and for damaging state property, including destroying the 108-mile fence on the country’s southern border with Serbia, erected last month.
