German Defense Minister condemned on Wednesday Hungarian police's brutal tactics against migrants at the Serbo-Hungarian border, calling it "not acceptable," media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen condemned Hungarian police for using brutal tactics, like tear gas, against migrants at the border with Serbia.

"This is not acceptable, and this is against the European rules we do have," the minister told CNN. "Therefore it is very important that we respect human dignity and human rights – and refugees have a right to be treated decently."

Von der Leyen said the issue of migrant treatment should be raised at talks among EU member states. On Tuesday, the German and Austrian chancellors called for a new EU leaders’ summit to be held next week.

Clashes on the southern Hungarian border continued on Wednesday after desperate asylum seekers stormed the gate at the barbed-wire fence that now separates the European Union’s eastern frontier and Serbia. Three children were injured in the clashes with riot police, who used tear gas against mostly Syrian families.

On Sunday, Germany imposed border checks on the border with Austria to control the flow of immigrants.
