Out of a total of 126 countries in the Global Firepower (GFP) database, the United States, Russia and China are the top three countries when it comes to potential conventional military strength.

Incidentally, Washington, Moscow and Beijing are also the leading arms exporters, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

The total amount of weapons a particular country has is one of over 50 factors used to determine the GFP ranking. These also include reliance on natural resources, geography and the state of the nation's economy.

In addition, land-locked countries are not penalized for their lack of a standing navy, while naval powers receive fewer points for limited naval capabilities.

However, the Global Firepower index does not take individual nuclear capabilities or the current political and military leadership into account.

"In the end, we hope [the ranking] presents an unbiased outlook on the potential conventional military strength of a given country if only to stir some healthy debate," the GFP explained on its website.

The other nations in the GFP top-10 include India, the United Kingdom, France, South Korea, Germany, Japan and Turkey.
