MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Bulgaria will deploy up to 1,000 troops to strengthen its border with Turkey amid the escalating refugee crisis, Chief Secretary of the Bulgarian Interior Ministry Georgi Kostov said Thursday.

"In times of complicated conditions under the migratory pressure, a plan has been launched to begin a gradual deployment of up to a thousand military personnel throughout the Bulgarian-Turkish border," Kostov said at a briefing, quoted by Sofia-based FOCUS news agency.

According to media reports, 50 soldiers have been sent to the border, while 160 more may be deployed by the end of the day.

Sofia reportedly launched the new plan after reports of hundreds of Syrian migrants reaching the Greek-Turkish border, near Bulgarian territory, overnight.

According to the European Commission, over 500,000 asylum seekers and migrants have entered the European Union since the beginning of the year, in what is being referred to as the worst refugee crisis since World War II.

In recent days, many European states have reinforced their borders, while some, including Germany, have instated stricter border controls.
