BERLIN, September 17 (Sputnik) — Gernot Erler cited the Iranian nuclear deal, brokered by Russia along with five other international negotiators, as an example of successful international responsibility.
“We don’t have as much time in Syria [as we had with Iranian talks]. But now, Russia makes steps, offers, which require reaction, this is a good sign that Russia can take part in the negotiations along with the United Nations,” Erler told the German Inforadio RBB broadcaster in an interview.
A wide platform of negotiation, similar to that used for Ukraine, must be created for Syria, he said, adding that Moscow must participate in the talks since it is a major ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Moscow is an international platform for resolving the ongoing civil war, having previously hosted two rounds of talks between Syrian opposition groups and government officials in 2015.
