Romanian Prime Minister Indicted on Corruption Charges
11:50 GMT 17.09.2015 (Updated: 11:51 GMT 17.09.2015) Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta was indicted Thursday on corruption charges, including money laundering and tax evasion, local media reported.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Romania TV channel, Ponta was indicted for crimes the prosecution claims he committed while he was a lawyer. Apart from complicity in money laundering and tax evasion, he is also accused of 17 counts of making false documents.
Ponta is charged with three separate counts of graft, the Romanian anti-corruption agency DNA announced in July. Some of his property has been seized.
The investigation that led to the charges against Ponta was launched eight years ago.
Ponta repeatedly denied any wrongdoing after he was charged.
Ponta announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Social Democratic party in July, saying he needed to prepare his defense, but stressed he would continue to serve as prime minister.
